This public artwork, titled Peace, stands at the Ministry of Health and Welfare Penghu Hospital. Created by mosaic master LEE Yi-Syun, its clean form and vivid colors transform a clinical environment into a warm, restorative space of healing.LEE, a professor who studied under Yen Shui-lung — the “Father of Taiwanese Craft” — employs a style that is simple, approachable, and rooted in daily imagery. By meticulously arranging ceramic tiles of varying brightness, saturation, and size, he grants flat mosaic surfaces a layered, three-dimensional visual tension.In Peace, a pair of sturdy hands lifts the vase from the earth, symbolizing the unwavering support of medical workers and the hospital’s role as a guardian of public health — offering patients a profound sense of reassurance. The work also draws on a classic cultural homophone: in Chinese, the word for “vase” (ping) sounds like the word for “peace” (ping), carrying a heartfelt blessing. The Firewheel flower—Penghu’s county flower—blooms across the vase, symbolizing resilience in harsh environments. Through this, the artwork weaves local identity into the core values of healthcare. Eschewing obscure metaphors, the work translates the abstract spirit of nursing into immediate, tactile symbols: a pair of hands, a vase, and a cluster of wildflowers.Since its installation during the 2011 hospital renovation, the artwork has become a landmark of Magong, standing as a testament to Penghu’s journey through the pandemic.
