Voices Across Generations: Heritage-confluence-awakening

This concert explores the concerto as its central theme, bringing together three representative works by J. S. Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the twentieth-century composer György Ligeti. Spanning different musical eras, the program traces the transformation and expansion of the concerto form—from the intricate and balanced contrapuntal structures of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, through the dramatic interplay and distinctive character of the instrumental voices in Mozart’s Serenade for Strings, to Ligeti’s bold reimagining of sound, space, and contemporary musical language in his Violin Concerto.Ligeti’s Violin Concerto, receiving its first public performance in Taiwan, is a particular highlight of the program. The work incorporates microtonality, sound clusters, folk-inspired materials, and an unconventional instrumental ensemble, combining experimental approaches with historical and cultural dimensions. Its Taiwan premiere not only marks an important moment in this concert, but also represents a meaningful connection between music education in Taiwan and the broader international landscape of contemporary music. The performance brings together students from the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, working under the guidance of their teachers throughout the rehearsal and performance process. This intergenerational collaboration creates a meaningful space for artistic exchange and transmission. Through performing side by side, musicians from different generations share techniques, experience, and the cultural spirit of music-making. The concert therefore serves not merely as a presentation of musical works, but as a living practice of intergenerational dialogue, artistic mentorship, and the transmission of musical traditions and ideas.
