One evening, when Mom is away, Dad asks Shau-yu to buy some eggs. Carrying a plastic bag, Shau-yu heads outside and begins to play with her shadow. Along the way, everything she encounters transforms an ordinary errand into a magical world of imagination. Leaves, glasses, marbles, cats, dogs, flowers, chewing gum, and Mom! Maybe even a big fish? Shau-yu finds so many wonderful things on the way to buy eggs! When she returns home, the red-and-white striped plastic bag is still empty, but her heart is full of stories to share with Dad about her amazing day. This work is adapted from On My Way to Buy Eggs by renowned picture book creator Chen Chih-Yuan. The original book won the Grand Prize at the 13th Hsin-Yi Children’s Literature Award and was selected for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition. The English edition was named one of the Best Children’s Books of 2003 by Publishers Weekly, and it’s also the first Taiwanese title to receive this recognition. Premiering at the 2025 Taipei Children’s Arts Festival, this production sold out instantly. Everyday city scenes—streets, corners, and arcades—become a living stage. Through Shau-yu’s playful movements and transformations, the light, shadows, and objects of the original picture book come vividly to life in the theatre. Hong Chien-Tsang A National Taiwan University graduate in Drama and Theatre, Hong Chien-Tsang works as a puppeteer and an actor in theatre and on screen. His creation focuses on shadow and object theatre. He has collaborated with many theatre companies, including Performance Workshop, Approaching Theatre, Tainaner Ensemble, M.O.V.E.
