We come from the ocean and may eventually become the ocean——
Unshakeable, vast, surging waves, profound reflections on the circle of life.
LEE\VAKULYA, winners of the 2023 Taishin Arts Award, debut their theater masterpiece.

As polar ice caps melt, creating undercurrents, will human existence be swept away?

Taishin Arts Award winners and dance/choreography duo LEE\VAKULYA (Lee Chen-wei and Zoltán Vakulya) collaborated with Hessisches Staatsballett on this production, for which John Luther Adams’ Pulitzer Prize–winning composition Become Ocean served as the creative basis. As the 12 dancers respond to the musical symmetry, shuttling back and forth between flowing water and solid ice, their fragmented movements gradually converge to form large powerful waves.

On stage, a giant installation ascends and descends, accompanying light and shadow. The flowing costumes and the lighting design blend into an ocean-like lightscape, providing the contours of vast ocean imagery and a testament to the dissolution of physical boundaries and perception of the circle of life. The audience comes to understand that the ocean nurtures everything and that we too may eventually become the ocean.
