Ballet at Weiwuying - Into the Fantasy of Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is a classic ballet over a century old that has been done in the classical Russian style, modernized by the mainstream art world in the US, and further rethought by contemporary artists. From its original structure by Russian choreographer Marius PETIPA to its evolution into George BALANCHINE’ s version (a Christmas classic), and then on to its contemporary makeovers, such as those by Rudolf NUREYEV and Mathew BOURNE, the ballet has seen both the traditional and the experimental. In 2023, the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying), a point of convergence for all kinds of artistic energy, initiated a production of the ballet as a trilogy, bringing together local artists and dancers while using it as a springboard for education and talent fostering. In the spirit of industrial-academic collaboration, students were invited to design the costumes, and we integrated Weiwuying’s Theater Arts and Education Project to bring choral groups from elementary schools in Kaohsiung to the stage. In this way, we jointly created an exclusively Taiwanese piece for the 2025 installation of the trilogy. This Christmas season, Weiwuying once again invites you to step into the fantasy world of the Nutcracker. We will see a girl who is growing up within a blend of reality and fantasy, looking back on her educational path and memories while facing the difficulty of pursuing her dreams and the pressure of life. In a state somewhere between sleep and consciousness, the other characters are at her side as she faces challenges and musters courage, leading her to finally achieve a maturity, tenacity, and beauty akin to that of the Sugar Plum Fairy. In this city that never snows, we still have a Nutcracker dream and are pressing boldly forward. Choreographer & Playwright|YEH Ming-hwaBorn in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Ming-hwa received her BFA in Dance from Taipei National University of Arts in 2006.
