Its extant scripts are believed to preserve an original style that can be traced back to Southern drama of the Song and Yuan dynasties, originating in the Quanzhou region of Fujian. This excerpt portrays the story of three characters’ elopement. Along the journey, Yichun’s innocent and playful nature adds a light-hearted tone, easing Wu Niang’s longing for her family.
