Akram Khan Company Thikra: Night of Remembering

In May 2025, British-Bangladeshi choreographer Akram KHAN’s classic ballet Giselle, in collaboration with English National Ballet, played to sold-out houses in Taiwan. That June, Akram Khan Company announced that it would cease operations, presenting Thikra: Night of Remembering as its final touring production. Commissioned by Wadi AlFann (the “Valley of the Arts” ) in Saudi Arabia, Thikra: Night of Remembering premiered as an outdoor performance at Saudi Arabia’s AlUla Arts Festival in January 2025, before beginning an international tour of indoor theatres in June. KHAN has spoken of standing in the desert of AlUla and of his desire to explore the many cultures that have left their marks there. Taking the Arabic word “Thikra” (memory) as his starting point and drawing on sacred rituals from different cultures, he worked with Saudi artist Manal AlDOWAYAN, who designed the set and costumes. The piece assembles all-female dancers from classical Indian and contemporary dance backgrounds, who honor history through a ritual that reaches across time, guided by the conviction that “there is no future without the past.” At his mother’s deliberate encouragement, KHAN trained in classical Indian dance from early childhood, turning his own body into a living museum. His hunger to understand popular cultures and modern arts, together with the openness of contemporary dance, lets his choreography fold many elements and move freely between tradition and modernity. In over 25 years at the helm of his company, he has become a master of his own language: his full-length solo DESH ingeniously blends animation and puppetry, while the commissioned work Giselle fuses Kathak, contemporary dance and ballet. As a son, a father, and a second-generation immigrant, KHAN finds tradition and inheritance emerging naturally as central concerns in his work, and a deep humanistic empathy runs through everything he makes. DESH interrogates questions of self-identity through dialogue with family; Xenos recounts the painful history of Indian colonial soldiers to reflect on the repercussions of war; Jungle Book Reimagined reinterprets a classic through a contemporary lens to express a reverence for the natural world; andThikra: Night of Remembering raises a ritual across time on stage, using an ensemble of female dancers to express a humility before tradition. Running an hour in length, Thikra: Night of Remembering opens with a woman in white — danced by CHIEN Ching-ying — at the center of the stage. In unison, the dancers mark the ceremony’s grandeur and joy with precise classical steps, then thread their arms and long, loose hair into elaborate patterns that deepen the ritual’s mystery: the hair streams through the air like a silk scarf one moment and, the next, draws a boundary like a sharpened blade. At once primal and contemporary, the work reveals KHAN’s singular choreographic voice. It is worth noting that CHIEN Ching-ying , born in Kaohsiung, has worked with KHAN for many years. Her leading role in Until the Lions with KHAN won her Outstanding Female Performance (Modern) at the 2016 National Dance Awards (UK). Her performance in Thikra: Night of Remembering is more masterly still — physically charged, emotionally rich and finely detailed — and not to be missed. 威廉斯Director & Choreographer|Akram KHANVisual Director / Costume & Scenography|Manal ALDOWAYAN Narrative Concept |Manal ALDOWAYAN & Akram KHAN Associate Artistic Director & Coach|Mavin KHOO Composer & Soundscape Designer|Aditya PRAKASH Sound Designer|Gareth FRY Lighting Designer|Zeynep KEPEKLI Associate Lighting Designer|Imogen CLARKE Dramaturge|Blue PIETARehearsal Directors|Charlotte POOK, Angela TOWLER, Chris TUDORPerformed by Laura BUFANO, CHIEN Ching-ying, Amrita DOSHI, Ekta DOSHI, Shreya KANNAN, Madoka KARIYA, Nikita RAO, Rohini SHETTY, Elpida SKOUROU, Mei Fei SOO, Seren WILLIAMS委託製作|埃爾奧拉,瓦迪阿爾芬(藝術之谷)室內版共製單位|柏林藝術節、布朗大學藝術學院、蒙彼里埃舞蹈節、碧娜.鮑許中心、沙德勒之井劇院、盧森堡市立劇院、巴黎市立劇院主要共製單位|巴格里基金會支持單位|英國英格蘭藝術委員會特別感謝|Light Contrast、Mrs KHAM、Yuko、Sayuri、Kenzo、Ayana KHAN Commissioned by Wadi AlFann, Valley of the Arts, AlUla Indoor adaptation co-produced by Berliner Festspiele, Brown Arts Institute at Brown University, Montpellier Danse Festival, Pina Bausch Zentrum, Sadler’s Wells, Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Théâtre de la Ville Paris Primary Co-Producing Partner Bagri Foundation Supported by Arts Council England Special thanks to Light Contrast, Mrs Khan, Yuko, Sayuri, Kenzo and Ayana Khan 藝術家介紹阿喀郎・汗舞團1999年7月,倫敦伊莉莎白女王音樂廳裡,年輕才華橫溢的舞者暨編舞家阿喀郎・汗與甫自藝術管理學成畢業的舞者法魯克・喬德里正展開一場熱絡且興致滿溢的對話。 Akram Khan CompanyIn July 1999 in the foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, an animated and curiosity-filled conversation took place between the young, gifted dancer/choreographer Akram KHAN and an ambitious former dancer and just recently graduated arts manager Farooq CHAUDHRY. That conversation laid the foundation stone for a dynamic collaboration, culminating in the creation of Akram Khan Company one year later. Inspired by Akram KHAN’s early training in the Indian classical dance form kathak, and the hybrid language that organically emerged when Akram’s kathak training encountered contemporary dance in his teens, a vision began to form, fuelled by a desire to learn and create through collaboration with the very best people across all the disciplines in the arts. The rules were simple: take risks, think big and daring, explore the unfamiliar, avoid compromise and tell stories through dance that are compelling and relevant, with artistic integrity. In almost 25 years, Akram Khan Company is now undisputedly one of the foremost innovative dance companies in the world. The programmes range from kathak and modern solos to artist-to-artist collaborations and ensemble productions. The Company has a major international presence and enjoys busy tours that reach out to many cultures and peoples across the globe. Akram KHAN has been the recipient of numerous international dance awards, the most notable being an Olivier Award for his solo production DESH in 2012. A milestone in the Company’s journey was the creation of a section of the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in 2012. Akram Khan Company enjoys artistic association with Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, Curve in Leicester, and other leading venues and festivals around the world.♠️周邊活動►【大師講座】林懷民X阿喀郎.
