In 1977, jazz trumpet maestro Dizzy GILLESPIE visited Cuba and met Arturo SANDOVAL. GILLESPIE was deeply impressed by SANDOVAL’s musical brilliance. They developed a peer-mentor dynamic that spanned over a decade. GILLESPIE was not only a musical mentor but a pivotal figure in SANDOVAL’s life. In 1990, with Dizzy GILLESPIE’s discreet assistance, SANDOVAL sought asylum at the US embassy during a European tour. This successful relocation began a new chapter in his cross-border artistic career, granting him the freedom to create and perform. Today, he is not only active in the jazz world but also collaborates with major symphony orchestras to perform classical trumpet concertos, showcasing his multifaceted musical prowess!

Arturo SANDOVAL has successfully synthesized Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz bebop, classical elegance, and rock energy — a fusion that makes significant contributions to the development of modern Cuban music.
